The Lutheran Mission of the Good Shepherd, dba, the Lutheran Urban Mission Agency operates almost solely from your generous donations. Please prayerfully consider supporting the Mission with your monthly or one-time gift. It is tax deductible and we provide you with a receipt. Your donations may come to use in a variety of ways.

Monetary Gifts

Mail
You may always mail you donation to us. Donations may be designated for a specific LUMA ministry or service. If you wish to give a gift in honor or remembrance of someone or in celebration of an event, we will list the honoree in our newsletter. We provide pre-addressed envelopes in each mailing for your convenience.

Online
You may also set up your donation as a one-time or monthly withdrawal from your bank account. Donating through our online portal is safe and secure. The portal is PCI-Compliant and uses 2048-bit encryption. The security certificate may be viewed on the donation page.


Thrivent Choice DollarsSM
If you are a Thrivent Financial member and eligible to direct Choice DollarsSM, we ask that you consider our ministries when you direct your Thrivent Choice Dollars. Go to the Thrivent website or call them at 1.800.847.4836.

Non-Monetary Gifts

LUMA Food Pantry

Conduct a food drive for our Mission Food Pantry with your congregation any time.
-Call Linda (913.948.9700) or Maria (816.569.5077) to schedule a delivery.
-We distribute food by household so it is very helpful if donations are in family-sized packages.
-Please, no bulk items--except for rice and beans, which we repackage.
-Most of our families have small children so please, do not purchase items in glass containers.

LUMA Christmas Store
We accept non-perishable gifts all year. You can also plan a Christmas Store gift drive, a Journey to the Manger, or a turkey drive at your church. Thank you for your generous, and much appreciated support!

Christmas Store Gift Needs (valued at $20-25 each) include, but are not limited to:

  • Adult men - useful tools (extension cord on reel, tool set, trouble light), heavy quilted flannel shirt, sweatshirt
  • Adult women - Practical household small appliances (crock pot, heavy duty stock pot or large skillet, rice cooker, coffee maker, toaster oven), dishes, linens for kitchens or bedroom, bedspreads
  • Teens - sports equipment, stylish clothing, electronics
  • Boys - hooded sweatshirts (larger sizes) - zip and pullover (darker colors), t-shirts, age appropriate toys
  • Girls - CD player, outfits (top & bottom)
  • Infants - layettes, crib toys, baby clothes, Fisher Price toys
  • Children - metal trucks and cars, wooden blocks and games, light-up small tennis shoes
  • New Blankets - full-size and larger
  • Christmas wrapping paper, tape, ribbon
  • Batteries (AA, AAA, C, D, and 9 volt)
  • Cash contributions and/or gift cards for our shoppers to supplement our stock of food and gifts

Blessings Abound Thrift Store
The Blessings Abound Thrift Store is a Christian not for profit organization called to serve the metropolitan Kansas City community by selling and recycling donated merchandise to provide aid to people in need. Blessings Abound operates at 9620 Nall, Overland Park, KS. Executive Director Tony Whitter manages this joint effort between the Lutheran Urban Mission Agency and Metropolitan Lutheran Ministries. Victoria McGowan supervises the volunteers who help with the day-to-day operations. Volunteers are needed--especially on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday mornings. They need persons able to lift heavy loads and move furniture on all days. You may reach Victoria by calling 913.648.0700. Store hours are from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Saturday.

Volunteer
Most of the Mission's ministries need volunteers. We could use your help in the following areas. If one appeals to you, please contact us for times.

  • ESL teachers (you do not have to speak Spanish and all materials are provided)
  • Lutheran Urban Mission Agency liaison for your congregation
  • Newsletter assembly volunteers - one or two days of food and fellowship every other month
  • Computer Lab teachers (materials provided)
  • Christmas Store volunteers
  • Christmas Store Shoppers Club
  • Host a Christmas Store Fundraiser
